How I Am Achieving Google Search Engine Rankings Absolutely Free
WARNING: This is a fairly long article. I would suggest going to get a snack. But come right back, you definitely need to read this.
I've read a great deal of articles on how to rank high on search engines (namely Google), get more visitors, and get noticed for those key words your really looking for. I've been working for the past 4 months on putting my own theories into practice and here is my 4 month report. (Note: I'm only monitoring on Google, I've not put any time into checking out sites like MSN or Yahoo at this time.)
First let me start by tell you what I've been basing my strategy on for the past 4 months. I've been doing SEO for quite some time and have always put much thought and effort into the actual content of websites as well as how and where I use certain key words. Over the past year however, I've noticed something, everything seems to be more and more about link backs and less about actual SEO. For instance, there was a time when meta tags were everything. If you had awesome meta tags, you were in the kill zone. However, that has been done away with on all major search engines due to widespread abuse. A combination of keywords, meta tags, and actual content then seemed to be the magic formula. Carefully balancing these components in your website meant everything. That too seemed to fade. Now it seems to be all about link backs. He with the most link backs seems to win. Regardless of what is going on from a SEO perspective. This is what I've been doing, acquiring link backs. Nothing else. You'll notice I basically have the same meta tags on every page, which haven't changed for 4 months. I have only made use of the title tags. He's me keep track of whats going on.
My New Theory
So now that I'd developed a theory it was time to put it into practice. No SEO, no changing meta tags, and no changing content. (Apart from my blog and a few spelling mistakes as I happen to be an expert speller :) ). The only thing I was to concentrate on were link backs. So I started thinking about it, What is the best way to get link backs? And it came to me. Wordpress Blogs. I'd used one long enough on another website to know that the comments users left could be used for link backs. If you input a URL your name then becomes a link. It's very simple. And that's is all I've done over the last 4 months. I a lot 20 min every evening (not weekends) to either writing a new blog post or posting comments in blogs around the Internet.

Goal #1 - 'Freelance Website Design'
My first goal was to become a player in the market for Freelance Website Design. 4 months ago I wasn't on google for these key words. I didn't know how well this world work so I didn't get my hopes up. I started posting comments in blogs. Let me say, before I look like a spammer, that I hate spam. If you don't have something to add to a blog, or a relevant comment to make, please don't. There is nothing worse than spam and I refuse to take any part in mucking up the Internet with spam. I only post if I have something relevant to say. So I began. For my name, I put 'Freelance Website Design' and for my URL obviously a link back to this site. Then I would post my comment. I worked at this for a month. I was extremely inconsistent and kept forgetting. (They say it takes 21 days to form a habit, but I'm still not consistent). I posted as often as I remembered with those key words.
Within 1.5 months of starting I made it to page 2 of the results and stayed there for about a week. Then I made it to the home page. It took under 2 months of very spotty work to make it where I wanted to be. Only from wordpress comments. Amazing! I was thrilled. I spent the rest of the month doing the same. I didn't want to drop off the list when I'd worked this long on it. Still to this day (Sept 20, 2007), 4 months later, you can find my site on the 1 page of results for 'freelance website design'. Currently there are 2,550,000 other sites for this key phrase. Not much, but a start. Clearly my theory had some merit.
Goal #2 - 'Website Design' (Big league)
Next I wanted to to go big league. It'd been 2 months and some days and I felt empowered. Like I'd uncovered something that very few people had thought of. My ultimate key phrase, the one all designers battle over is 'website design'. I would personally probably kill for this. There are currently over 850,000,000 (850 million) different websites listed for this term. That's quite a group. Much more so than the under 3 million for my previous goal. Without changing anything except the key phrase I left in the name field for comments, I kept on. I decided I should become slightly more regular if I wanted this to work. Well, it didn't work. I'm still spotty. But I try. 20 minutes an evening either devoted to a new post, or a hand full of comments on blogs that I find insightful and interesting. Another 2 months goes by and something extraordinary happens.
I check Google for 'website design'. Up until a week ago when I checked I was no where on the list that I could find, at least not within the first 1,000 results. I was actually starting to loose hope, perhaps I was wrong about how it works, perhaps link backs aren't everything.... So I check 'website design' and I'm #64 out of 100. Holy crap, how did this happen? Out of 850+ million websites, I'm #65 on google for no search engine optimization only wordpress comments. Incredible. It's been about a week since I first noticed and today as I check I am #52 out of 857,000,000.
It's actually having an impact too. I've probably owned my domain for about 2 years, maybe more or less. I have never received much recognition and have never put much work into it. I just wanted to own my domain (alfredfox.com) so no one else could have it. In the past 2 months I've gotten many requests for website designs, SEO, graphic design, etc. So much that I'm actually very busy as of late. And I'm still climbing in the rankings.
Free Search Engine Marketing - 20 min a day (sorta)
For some this may not seem like a big deal. So what, I've got on the search engines for a few key words, who cares. Well for those people, hit your stumble button and Jog On. This means something big, at least to me. Think about it. At least with the example of 'website design' there are large corporations that pay a lot of money to be in those rankings. I've spent zero money, it's taken me under 20 min a day (average) over the course of about 3 months and I'm gaining on them. And doing what? Massive SEO? Link farming? Buying up link backs? Not at all. I've done absolutely nothing other than leave blog comments on blogs I would otherwise be reading anyway. I mean... can it get any easier?
This is only one case example. It's not 100% conclusive nor is it a guaranteed method, but it's certainly opened up my eyes to a lot of new possibilities. Think of how much money I could have burned up trying to get listed when I am getting what I was shooting for for free. I think its a beautiful thing. And I hope someone else benefits from this.
I'm going to keep close tabs on this from now on and spend the next month or so trying to get closer to the home page. Who knows, maybe I'll succeed. At this rate, I don't see why it's not possible. Anyway, I'd be very interested to hear your comments and thoughts about this. This may be one of the only truly FREE ways to get the search engine ranking you desire for the keywords you want. How cool is that?
Comments for How I Am Achieving Google Search Engine Rankings Absolutely Free
Hi Alfred, This is a great article! I've never done much commenting on other peoples' blogs, but after reading this I'll certainly be paying more attention to it. BTW, thanks for visiting my site. The comments and encouragement are very much appreciated. Ruthie.
I agree, well said. Very good web site.
This is an enlightening blog post that has opened my eyes to new avenues that need to be explored. I also thought that word count and key phrase placement in my existing site was of utmost importance for web ranking but after reading this post it has given me new 'light'!
hi
thanks alot , i like all ur example and article specially , its worth trying , i am goona spend 20 min, like the way u tell in article, nice simple write-up and layout of this blog in black and white is looking amazing :)
Thank you for the useful information.
So that explains your comment as "Website Design" on my blog lol. Good theory, obviously works!
Hi Alfred,
Thanks for visiting my site and thanks for the comment.
It's good to find a blog sponsorship, covers the costs to start with :)
Regards
Alan
Yeah, I see that you have used my blog to post those "non-spam" comments... Not really not spam, but I let it through.
Thanks for the read, I only just stumbled across your blog, and this post made my day. All I need to do now is think of some keywords to use as a name that are.. relevant.
Most people consider it already spam to use a keyword instead of your name while commenting. An exception is your blog name: Call it "Fox Website Deisgn" and then you can use it without appearing spammy.
Very interesting article! I do think that Tad Chef's comment is valid, but to "purists" even that approach may seem "spammy"... After all, who is leaving the comment, you ("Alfred Fox") or your company ("Fox Website Design")? ;-)
Anyway, best of luck getting to the front page (and keep us informed of your progress)!
Marcel
I have read a bunch on linking, but your article was very interesting. I need to start this habit of yours, or at least try like you did. Just a mere 20 minutes in the evening does not seem like much to me. Thanks for the article.
This is very interesting indeed but the questions here are:
How many blogs do accept your comment with keywords in it (as a percentage)
And how many links did you get in these months?
You missed this info
That's a pretty long and very valuable article. I will give your strategy a try and check if it is also aplyable into other languages so I will start with what you have been doing too. Thank you for sharing this valuable information!
Wow! We love this blog, because not only do you give an excellent insight into this technique, but anyone can 'check you out' by simply visiting Google and typing in your name! We wish you much success in your quest for the Google Home Page! Keep up the good work. :-)
Yeah, congratulations..this is realy COOL :) ...is what i want to made too... Thanks for the reminder :D
Well done, man:)
Indeed it would be great info if you'd let us know about a percentage of acceptance of your comments.
There are many blogs out there with no comments whatsoever.
I think in such a blog (with 0 comments) one should be reluctant to post to start with, cause comments are rated and most of them Rejected.
Wow you can rank that high for free? Amamzing!
Very interesting read. What you shared with us is definitely a gold nugget for all us web designers to spread the word about our sites.
Great story and thanks for the tip...
I think this is great. I love this post, and I'm going to try it out and see what happens. Thanks!
This is such a fantastic idea man. Very nice trick, clever.
I too have noticed that no matter how interconnected and "Google Friendly" I have been making my websites, it has had little to no effect on its position within the results. I have noticed this too, i was wondering what-to-do because no matter how many keywords, bot friendly internal links, or how much you optimize site structure for spiders... it seems that lately that has not had as much to do with listing position.
Its great to find out that you figured out this new trick. Thanks for sharing. Very Nice Find.
Your comments and sharing are a real encouragement to anyone looking to generate some ranking and as a result - interested visitors. I didn't catch any reference to the blogs you were posting to - were they related to the keyword or random?
Rgds
Kevin
That's interesting i've just formed a website design partnership with a graphic designer before that I did SEO for UK Gov MoD. You're right it use to be killer meta tags and now a lot more geared to linkbacks. We're pretty much cornering the market here in Malaga Spain slowly even contracting for large companies anonymously but can't use links to our sites which are numbering 6 now not even having time to SEO our own sites. Well done Alfred keep it up we're following this route.
Great, but what about "nofollow" attribute which is used in most blogs for links in comments? I thought that Google don't count these links.
great article, although you published my unique way of getting awesome rankings ;)
Nice job, its always a great feeling to take a top 10 on a competitive phrase. Google just gave me SEO Canada, not a bad Christmas present :)
Alfred,
This is truely astonishing, maybe I will begin incorporating it into my work :) . I found this site via google and this was the best 5 mins i spent reading a blog post. Thanks alot for sharing.
Joe
Interesting article.
How are you accounting for the fact that the vast majority of blogs have 'no follow' tags attached to external links?
Would'nt you call this borderline spamming? I mean if your producing the comments enmass how the hell can you read the posts and make a useful comment?
I don't worry about the no follow blogs. It makes no difference on whether or not I post a comment. Once again, I only comment on blogs that I read the article for, and then still, only a portion of those.
All of these results are very positive bi-products of something I would be doing anyway. I simply switched up my method. Instead of placing my name 'Alfred' in the name field. I put my Keyword. It doesn't make my comment any less valuable.
@Tad & Marcel,
A work-around might be for him to use Al of Fox Website Design?
I'm just starting in the Google world and it can be oh so Overwhelming and confusing. Never know if I'm spending time on pointless attempts or not. But your article seems to make a strong point. So ... would this be an appropriate time form me to link my site?? http://tonsofsocks.com/
I'm going to start and use this strategy, and see if it works. If it does, you are a genius. :D
Thanks for your helpful article. I can't wait to test it out.
Increasing your Search Engine ranking by posting to WordPress is completely valid. But it's more than that.
What you really did that was key was provide content that was relevant and you contributed.
I use keywords for the name as well. I do this for a couple of reasons.
1. I have absolutely no advertising on my site and I pitch nothing to anyone. Actually, I offer completely free help if anyone simply asks.
2. My goal is to just build a quality site. My benefit will be for it to serve as a reference and nothing more. The way I see it, it's the only way to really monetize a website that you don't exploit with text links, etc. In other words, you give and you get back in ways that you might not have even thought of yet.
I will be making changes to the website this month and next month. I would like to exchange a column with you if you are interested as I like your model and share a lot of the same approaches.
Crack Google
I am full time web developer and want to go into freelancing as I am gonna have a baby. So I was thinking where to start, looking for places to advertise my skills and stuff. Your website has given me a legup and a plan how to work things out. Any further advise would be very appreciated.
Keep up the good work!
Great experiment and seemed to get you some great results. Definitely worth a try!
Hmmm... I think that it is very good idea to spend only 20 minutes on marketing a day, because it is hard to do it for example for5 hour or more a day, but for a month we will recieve a job of 10 hours of effective working...Thanks
Congrats Alfred. When I checked for 'website design' today I see your site at position 30. Its amazing how long term these results seem to be. Thanks for the advice and motivation.
Great idea and a nice approach and the best part that it is free and seems to work even better in the long term. These results are impressive and your technique will now be part of my website promotion. Thanks.
Congratulations and thank you for the useful information! Regards Alex
I have been spending a lot of time on onpage optimisation for our property website, and have seen no results over the past month.
It is good news that blog entries can help, as I have just started thinking about this option, and have even added a test blog to our site.
gee... I knew thats right, I started my comment blast (still relevant comment) after I read jonathan legers book... It is thrills me that it just the matters of number.. thanks dude
It's good to find a blog sponsorship, covers the costs to start with :)
Very interesting idea. I've been working in Interactive Marketing and I hate to admit that this didn't occur to me. I've been META tagging, matching content, etc. in hopes to move up page ranks. I'll have to give this a try!
First of all, I wanna say Thank you, you are completely right on in my opinion. I am so sick of people just wanting to put up articles on things they know people want answers to and they give wrong information or are just trying to sell something. It is so hard for people to find the right info anymore but when I find it that is where I direct them. I will definately be directing them here. and thank you again for awesome correct info!
Sounds like it worked well, always thought the nofollow tag made posting pointless but your results prove otherwise. Will give it a go and see if i have similar results.
Changed my name from Lottery to the above, currently increased my backlinks but doesn't seem to be many of the blogs linking the name to the anchor text, wondering if many others have come across this.
That is really interesting. There is tons of information about how the no-follow rule prevents any backlink credit to be given. Maybe it's not the maximum credit, but maybe it's a partial credit given for the link?
This is a great post Alfred. I aggree with you for the most part. I also agree with Malcolm at the top of the comment section to get more .gov and .edu.
I must say, I'm surprised! In 20 minutes, I would only expect to be able to leave 3-4 valuable comments, and 3-4 of them would probably be no-follow. Did you acheive better than this?
I would also have through that google would significantly dampen the value of a link within a blog comment pattern of content, which I imagine they can detect reasonably easily.
I would be sceptical, but your rankings speak for themselves! Good for you - do you have any useful tools to share?
great article and tips but you are not on 1st page for that term :-|
@dissertation UK
For freelance website design on the US based Google I am currently on the Home page. I gather that different regions display different results based on more localized business.
I had trouble finding this information on the Internet!
Thank you for taking the time to post!
Your case study was great. Your results were really encouraging. I'm a newbie at this and I'm reading everything I can on improving search engine rankings. I'm going to work on this every day and try to be consistent. I'll keep you posted on my results as well. Thanks for the tip!
A great post, very honest and sincere words right from the heart. Keep at it. I'm sure you will get to the first page sooner than you can imagine!

I'm actually quite surprised that there aren't a lot of people who are familiar with this tactic. What's somewhat odd to me is that this article pretty much highlights step-by-step how to do it, but if you look at a percentage of the comments posted on this very page:
1. People are either not taking advantage of it.
2. People aren't doing it right.
3. People are using their company name or name as their anchor text.
4. People are using their url in the actual comments box.
5. People are using mis-spellings in their anchor text. I understand why, but why not go for the correct spelling if by chance you get lucky and it works out for you?
This strategy is awesome and powerful, but think outside of the box too and think of ways to get link banks from other types of sites besides blogs. You never want to put all your eggs in one basket.
J.
Great post. Like you said though - only do it when you've got something to contribute. I'd add - use blog commenting as part of your overall link building strategy - not as a means to an end in itself.
I agree this is a very looooong article, but a very helpful article. I started a test of my own today using your method on a keyword phrase that at the moment has me at #5 for the search term Australian cash loans.
The term is quite competitive and most of you would say that position five is a fantastic result. It is. But position 2 is were the big money is. So thankyou for the post. If I remember to come back here, I will keep you informed.
Thanks from an Aussie(Australian slang for a person who lives in Australia)
Cheers
I searched your keyword and I have an update on your position, but you have to approve my comment first! Nah Im kidding. You were at position 47 on page 5
I am certainly going to try your method. Anyone know of a way you can search for dofollow comments? Most of the ones I am finding are nofollow
Your blog is very informative. However, earning money and balance your credit cards is pretty hard task but your post and experienced serve and teach me how to handle and make it more simple and manageable.
Thanks for the tips… Best regards.
Great article. I really enjoyed reading about alternate techniques. Well alternate to what I've done previously.
Great article ha-ha))
That was a great artical! I've been doing some extensive research on SEO as of late and this has been the most interesting and helpful blog. Thank You for sharing this info, I don't know that many people that would give away their secrets.
Alfred? that's my cousin's name :)
Wow, what a cool strategy! I wonder what is the impact of entering key terms in the "name" field.
would this increase rankings or not?
I am starting to use it and test this myself over the next weeks.
Hi Alfred !
Never read a more useful article than this. That's is really a great and FREE method to get some valuable page rank on Google even for high competitive keywords. I will use this method starting today. Hopefully I will remember it.
Thanks a lot, Mark.
I never really thought this would be the best way to do it, but I think Google still look at no follows anyway.
Interesting read!
Alfred,
that's pretty wild that you're sharing your technique.
i'm in the freelance Flash animation business. time to time i do need a programmer to collaborate with. if you need an animator, please look me up.
thanks.
Nice interesting post does it still hold true for today in January wheres the nofollow effect here...
How did you select sites to comment was there some LSI there?
Such a simple idea but obviously very effective. Thanks for your insight.
Thanks a lot for a valuable information
I wonder if this still holds true, two years after the article was written. It's definitely true that he with the most incoming links wins, but on my sites it doesn't seem like links from blog comments count for much.
Thank you so much for sharing. I have a site that's on page 3 for my search terms, and I'm going to see how long it's going to take to get to page 1. I started on Monday. I'll report back to let you all know. Great article!!
UPDATE: Mon,Tues,Wed site was at position 25. This morning it's at position 17. Vast improvement.
Oh, man that is really cool. I am pretty new to SEO and I just got a client who's goal to get on the home page as well.
Also, I just discovered wordpress and it really changed my view of the SEO. Thanks again for the great article! Z
Great post, yet another day for me to learn something new! =) Got a question though, what good is it to be number 80-90 of any number of million sites, it`s still worth next to nothing? Or am I wrong?
Awesome article! Before reading this article I was thinking about the very same approach. I am glad to see you've gotten some good results from it.
Great idea on a low dollar way to become part of the viral traffic that i have been hearing about. "Comment sniper" was just installed on my site. I installed it not knowing it's true potential. I now am planning to learn to optimize it's power. Thanx for the info. Here's Comment sniper it's free: www.commentsniper.com/ have a great day!
It sounds good in theory, but the "name" link is a NO FOLLOW link, even on this blog... so it does NOT get counted, making the efforts a waste, no?
Every single name on this page is "no follow". Do they still get counted by Google as linkbacks?
Nick
@Nick - I was inclined to agree with you before I started seeing results. Going back using various tools I was able to determine that a high percentage of my link backs were in fact 'NO-FOLLOW', however, it doesn't seem to matter. I still retain a #1 position for 'freelance website design' in Google though I've not done anything with those keywords in about a year. If Google is factoring it in, it seems to be for other purposes. Thanks for visiting!
Wow, this is very interesting, I have recently moved host and for some reason google no longer lists my site, I'll take a look into this and try it out,... thanks for the info. :D
Worth a try but I wonder if your time would have been better spent requesting backlinks from other web masters rather than just posting comments on various blogs.
What does everyone else think?

Hi! Thanks for the great guide. , thanks to the people that put time into this. I will check how much it help to get a backlink to my site.

That's great! But you've slipped for "Website Design" - you're 91 on Google but that's still really good. I think what you need now are some good High Page Rank backlinks from some .gov and .edu sites - Google loves them. If you leave a comment on my site I'll show you how to do it but I don't want the whole world to know. cheers mate, Malkie, Paris.
